Limited-edition prints, inspired by Robert Kirkman’s comic books, debut in
time for October 31 premiere of AMC original series

LOS ANGELES (28 October 2010) – The Secret Headquarters (SHQ), the cult favorite source for graphic novels, is pleased to announce the creation of special limited-edition artwork to celebrate the October 31st premiere of The Walking Dead, an AMC original series based on the comic series by Robert Kirkman.

The four prints were designed by Jordan Crane and hand-printed by Jordan Rae; each was
illustrated by a different accomplished artist (Lisa Hanawalt, Jon Vermilyea, Johnny Ryan and
Jordan Crane). Inspired by shooting range targets, the prints pay homage to the acclaimed
comic series. Available individually or as a set of four, the archival-quality prints measure 23 x 35 inches on acid-free 70lb. paper. Each print is limited to a run of 100 copies and will be signed by both the artist and Kirkman; single prints are $40 and the set of four is $150.

Robert Kirkman, creator and writer of The Walking Dead, says “I'm astounded by the talent
involved and couldn't be happier with how this turned out. I think people are going to love these prints and I hope it brings people into Secret Headquarters in droves because it's a great store.”

The prints are currently available for purchase as sets of four; individual prints will be available for purchase as of October 29th, either at The Secret Headquarters or via walkingdeadprints.com.

Henry and Glenn Forever is the ridiculous idea born out of a night of too many beers shared by a group of artists who sometimes call themselves The Igloo Tornado. On that night Gin Stevens said "There should be a Tom of Finland book, but with Henry and Glenn..." and Tom Neely and Scot Nobles replied: "Yes! And we're going to do it!" This bold idea (or is it a bad idea?) became a small zine that grew into a notorious legend that has now become a nice little book published by Cantankerous Titles.

In order to keep the artists calm and in the room we will be serving our usual whiskey and beer extravaganza. The festivities start at 8pm and will go until Glenn or Henry decide that they have had enough of this nonsense...

Secret Headquarters will have the original art work on hand for the month of May as well as copies of the now, somewhat notorious, Henry and Glenn Forever book.

David Petersen was born in 1977. His artistic career soon followed. A steady diet of cartoons, comics and tree climbing fed his imagination and is what still inspires his work today. David was the 2007 Russ Manning Award recipient for Most Promising Newcomer, and in 2008, won Eisner Awards for Best Publication for Kids (Mouse Guard Fall 1152) and Best Graphic Album – Reprint (Mouse Guard Fall 1152 hardcover). He received his BFA in Printmaking from Eastern Michigan University where he met his wife, Julia. They continue to reside in Michigan with their dog, Autumn.

English artist Jeremy Eaton will unveil nearly two
dozen new and recent works in his popular series of Cartoon Jumbles
illustrated paintings, featuring the irreverent pairings of cartoon
icons including Uncle Sam & Uncle Scrooge, Fred Flintstone & Alley Oop,
Little Lulu & Wonder Woman, The Yellow Kid & Mr. Natural and Mark Trail & Bullwinkle, all rendered in soft gouache watercolor tones and ink, on austere, pulp-hewn manila paper.

Called Guston-like by preeminent Seattle art critic, Regina Hackett
(Seattle Post-Intelligencer), Eaton's delicate yet forceful paintings
are full of surprises and deft trickery, with numerous unexpected shapes
appearing within their thoughtful cross-pollinations. Having commenced
upon the series during the Spring of 2008, the artist, best known for
his early '90s comics published by Fantagraphics, Kitchen Sink and other
alternative imprints, has created more than three dozen of the
paintings, many of which will be included in the Secret Headquarters
show, made available for purchase for the very first time. Response to the enigmatic series has been strong throughout the cartooning community, and beyond. It seems Eaton's plucky disassembling of such well-loved characters as Mr. Magoo, Charlie Brown, Nancy and Bugs Bunny, has pushed some notoriously opinionated buttons.

of such groundbreaking alternative comics as Neat Stuff, Hate and the

We discovered Phil Noto back in 1934, about the time we were inventing
comic books. It was in the legal system where Noto, a court artist,
feverishly developed his dramatic drawing style. Reporting for the
court was an honor not lost on Noto but after years of service he craved
more. He relished the thought of documenting an amazing voyage on
the open seas. So, with much debate, Noto packed his bag (not unlike a hobo)
and set off for adventure!

We rediscovered Phil back in 1982. Not long after he washed ashore with little
more then what he took off with (not unlike a hobo). He was found with blistered,
bloody and pastel caked hands. He had been blissfully creating masterful works
of art, on the sidewalk. We thought Noto's talent might be better admired framed
and hung on some solid walls.

Kevin Scalzo's latest group of work is focused on themes of alienation andestrangement and how that has been reflected in the anxiety of the current times. Using elements of abstraction, cartoon imagery, distortion,violent markings, anderasures, he creates feelings of an impending doom.

His work has appeared in many publications such as Beasts, Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, & True Stories Vol 2, BLAB! as well as numerous galleries around the world. Scalzo's work has been seen most recently in the BLAB! Show at the Copro-Nason Gallery in Santa Monica.
Kevin Scalzo, born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1969, was raised in the United States, and currently lives and works in Northampton, Massachusetts with his wife and daughter.

Painter, illustrator and author Mark Todd took his first creative cues from comic books and Star Wars: worlds of inventive fantasy that still inform his art. His latest work involves intense scrutiny and alteration of classic comic covers from "Fantastic Four," "X-Men," "Iron Man," "Spiderman" and other series, including the work of legendary illustrators like Jack Kirby.

"I love the type, the heavy shadows, the colors and the way they seemed to use every inch of the page," says Todd. "I sit and study them, and my brush reconstructs them."

Todd is referencing the past, waxing nostalgic about it and simultaneously lending his own post-modern sensibility to it, employing a limited palette, repetition, distortion and mixed media materials including spray paint, cel-vinyl, glossy varnishes and dusty stains. The pieces are rounded at the edges, appearing as prized objects; tablets encoded with civilization's most iconic collective wisdom.

His work has appeared in scores of publications including Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, Spin, New York Times, and for Country Music Television. Todd graduated with honors in 1993 from Pasadena's Art Center College of Design, where he has also taught since 2003. He has also written several books, including "Whatcha Mean, What's A Zine? " co-authored with his wife and fellow artist, Esther Pearl Watson.

MATS!? was born in France to itinerant Swedish parents. He commits his first artistic act in kindergarten in the form of a scatological graffiti on the blackboard. Rewarded as he was with corporal punishment, the artistic path was thus laid.

Mats!? past sporadic outputs of comic work, interspersed with commercial illustration work has given way to bouts of throwing paint on canvas as well as printing on glass. Through various mediums,the unifying factor in his work is his use of a visual vocabulary rooted in comics as means of expression.

Mats!? might be best known for his critically acclaimed book Asiaddict, an amazing cartoon travel log of his bizarre trip through Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Mats!? has also created art for Last Gasp comix, Comix 2000, as well as the magazines Real Stuff (Fantagraphics) Buzzard (Cat-head comics), Hustler, Screw and BLAB!

The artist will attend the opening from 8pm to 10pm.

New comic book inspired paintings by modern master Ryan Heshka feel familiar in an old timey and eerie way. The illustrations of monsters, pin-up girls, robots and dated comic books feel almost discarded or better yet, found among the dusty items of an estate sale. It is clear that Heshka has been inspired by pulp magazines, science images and old advertisements but he manages to go beyond these influences to deliver us to a striking new world of delicately distorted and painted dreams.

Heshka has painted for BLAB!, Vanity Fair, Playboy, Wall Street Journal, Barrons, Popular Science, Dreamworks SKG, Fast Company, PC World, Smart Money, Esquire, Harper Collins, and Newsweek.

Secret Headquarters will be celebrating the art of Seth Fisher with a display of original work that spans his all too short comic book career. With work that channels the likes of Darrow, Moebius and Otomo, we are engulfed in a world of candy colored, calculated chaos. Fisher's pages are oozing with complicated beasts and the visions of sleepwalking dreams. Brains are exploding and monsters are comfortable among the overgrowth of these surreal, tightly rendered environments. An Eisner award nominee, Fisher's artwork will continue to inspire far into the future.

In addition to Fisher's original artwork, we will have available for purchase two mini comics: Bob's Life and The Man With a Thousand Noses. SHQ will also offer a never before seen (or printed) mini sketchbook which features Seth's Batman:Snow concepts and layouts. Copies of Seth's Marvel and DC work will also be on hand.

The art gallery opening, held at Silver Lake comic book/art gallery hybrid The Secret Headquarters, will feature art on display from the sketchbook from Art Adams, Neal Adams, Sergio Aragones, Howard Chaykin, Sean Chen, Frank Cho, Dave Gibbons, Gene Ha, J.G. Jones, Mike Kaluta, Josh Middleton, Mike Mignola, Terry Moore, Bill Morrison, George Perez, Andrew Robinson, John Romita Sr., Joe Rubinstein, Tim Sale, Walter Simonson, Joe Sinnott, Michael Turner, Matt Wagner, Bernie Wrightson and more.

In addition, event attendees can get their own 3-minute sketches on the blank pages in the back of the book. Books will be sold for $10 or book with a sketch for $25.

By common consensus, Peter Bagge is the funniest cartoonist of his generation.
Bagge is probably best known for the '90s comic book series Hate, which followed the exploits of the slacker ne'er-do-well Buddy Bradley (and managed to show probably the truest representation of Seattle during the "grunge" boom and bust).

But the Buddy Bradley saga is only a small part of Bagge's oeuvre, which saw its first glory days in R. Crumb's Weirdo Magazine (which he edited for several issues) and continues to expand to this day as he appears in Reason magazine, MAD and the Weekly World News.

So - it goes without saying that we just pulled the above from the Fantagraphics web site. Might want to add that Bagge also did animated commercials for Round Table Pizza. And is currently finishing up Apocalypse Nerd for Dark Horse.

Secret Headquarters is proud to announce an evening with Tom Neely and his new book: The Blot, July 20th.

The Blot by Tom Neely Painter and cartoonist Tom Neely's first graphic novel, "The Blot," is like a sad song that breaks your heart while reminding you of life's beauty. "The Blot" follows a nameless everyman who, while dealing with the fallout from a doomed relationship, is stalked by a mysterious black splotch. As the story unfolds, this shape-shifting blot appears as a harmless cloud of ink, a faceless demon, a source of strength and an inescapable darkness, testing our character in a new way with each metamorphosis.

With a drawing style resembling the 1930s newspaper comic strips of E.C. Segar and Floyd Gottfredson, and a surrealistic sensibility inspired by painter René Magritte, Neely eschews traditional, representational comic storytelling and finds innovative new ways to tell an ultimately human story about love and loss.

"The Blot" and its characters are an outgrowth of the work Neely has done in his paintings, illustrations and animation over the past several years. He currently lives in Los Angeles, where he works as a freelance animator and illustrator. He earned an M.F.A. in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000 and has exhibited his paintings in multiple galleries throughout San Francisco, and L.A. Neely's illustrations have been featured in dozens of magazines and literary journals and have been featured in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 American Illustration annuals. His comics have appeared in the Graphic Classics anthologies, Expo 2003, Grind, Scram, Kitchen Sink and Nickelodeon Magazines.

Tom will be signing copies of The Blot at SHQ from 8pm - 10pm.

John Pham is a Xeric Foundation grant winner who is best known for his Manga meets Indy styled Epoxy comic book anthology. Epoxy has been featured in XLR8R and Publishers Weekly and was named "the Best Comic of 2003" by THE FACE (U.K.).

Pham has not updated his web site since 2005 as he has been frantically working on his new comic book series entitled: Sublife. Secret Headquarters will have pre-release, limited edition, hand assembled copies.

Rob and Ako live up the street from Secret Headquarters in what some would call a shack. They like to refer to the place as a log or The Log. The sad part of this story is not the living conditions, but the possible non-living conditions as The Log has been sold. Or is going to be sold. Either way, Sato started to pack. All books are boxed you'll be happy to know. It might be safe to say that his Xeric award is tucked away in there as well. He won that prestigious grant a few years ago for his BURYING SANDWICHES graphic novel. Know this; he’s been compared to Winsor McCay – Wha’! (Though that review was from his cousin.)

What can we say about Sato's partner in crime Ako Castuera? Actually, not much. We don't know a goddamn thing about her. Except that she lives in The Log with a bunch of boxes. We are really on top of our game here at SHQ.

Born in Northern New Hampshire, Anders grew up there and in Minneapolis . THE HERO INITIATIVE TO AUCTION OFF 100 ONE-OF-A-KIND ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #100’s

Special gallery auction and event fundraiser will run from February to March, and culminate with an eBay auction.

The Hero Initiative, the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need, has teamed with Marvel Comics and the industry’s top talent to create 100 covers for Ultimate Spider-Man #100.

More than 80 talented artists were tapped to do a sketch on the blank cover of Ultimate Spider-Man #100 created specifically for The Hero Initiative. Reaction from the artistic community was so overwhelming that some artists insisted on doing two covers.

“The artists have created some amazing pieces of work for this fundraiser,” said Jim McLauchlin, President of The Hero Initiative. “It’s great to see some of the industry’s top talent participating, and I’m sure comic fans will love the covers as much as we do.”

Proceeds from auctions will continue to support Hero’s effort of providing a financial safety net for yesterdays' creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work.

To best showcase the work, the fundraiser has been split in four different parts: a gallery showing at Secret Headquarters in Los Angeles on February 3 that will start the ball rolling by auctioning off one book; a showing and auction at MegaCon, in which 20 more of the books will be auctioned off; and the remaining 79 covers to be shown at the New York Comic-Con, with 20 more auctions taking place. The then-remaining 59 covers, including some of the prize pieces, will be auctioned off on eBay in March.

The remaining 59 will be auctioned off via eBay.com in the beginning of March. Remaining covers will include such artistic talent as J. Scott Campbell, Jim Cheung, Frank Cho, Greg Land, Michael Lark, Jae Lee, Todd McFarlane, Terry Moore, and Bill Morrison. Even writers and ace doodlers such as Guillermo del Toro and Neil Gaiman have joined in with covers of their own.

The “Ultimate 100,” as it’s come to be called, was largely the brainchild of Hero Board Member Brian Pulido and Marvel Publisher Dan Buckley. Pulido, an innovator of exotic variant covers (including Chromium, leather, velvet, and die-cut), conceived the initial concept. "What's cooler than an edition limited to 100, featuring 100 custom drawings of an A-list character?,” Pulido asked. “Each one is a unique edition.” Marvel’s Buckley approved the project and shepherded it through Marvel.

“Half the fun in this was tracking down some of the great Spidey artists of the past,” said McLauchlin. “Tom Lyle is now teaching at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and Frank Springer is enjoying semi-retirement in Maine . Both guys thought the comic world have forgotten them, but we certainly remembered.”

"This is project is an amazingly unique opportunity and nothing like it has ever been achieved and most certainly will never be again. One hundred, let me repeat that, ONE HUNDRED, custom hand drawn Spider-Man covers on a seminal issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, drawn by the very finest artist working in the field today and some of the most legendary past greats who have ever grace a comic’s page. It’s a sight worth seeing and bidding on and to make it even better, it's all for an incredible cause," noted Hero Board Member and Marvel Editor In Chief Joe Quesada.

Secret Headquarters is pleased to announce our art opening with JORDAN CRANE.

Winner of numerous awards in the design and comic industries, Jordan Crane first emerged in the comic world in 1996 with the anthology NON. Crane edited, contributed to, and published Non, which has become known as that era’s showcase for the most explosive young experimental cartoonists. The short lived series has been compared to Spiegelman and Mouly’s Raw.

Crane’s first self published comic novella, The Last Lonely Saturday (now published by Fantagraphics), is noted for well observed narratives that focus on the vulnerability and mystery of the human experience. Crane’s work simultaniously has the feel of humble handcrafted objects made in the garage of a lonely teenager, and the sophisticated work of an artist at the height of his form.

Crane’s most recent book, The Clouds Above has been called a cross between Where the Wild Things Are and The Wizard of Oz. Clouds has earned an Ignatz award nomination for Outstanding Graphic Novel and Outstanding Artist.

Jordan also designed Fantagraphics’s, Mome, a quarterly anthology of comics by up-and-coming cartoonists

Crane is currently working on a quarterly comic book called Uptight where he will present new short stories and serialize Keeping Two, his sprawling, epic meditation on family, death, and the imagination.

Johnny first developed his hilarious drawings in the self-published title Angry Youth Comix. Now published by Fantagraphics Books, Ryan’s AYC has become the international bastion of lowbrow humor cartooning. Ryan’s utterly unpretentious taboo-tackling is an infectious bombardment of political incorrectness.

Johnny's unmistakable and humorous drawings have appeared in MAD, LA Weekly, National Geographic Kids, Hustler, Vice Magazine, Cool & Strange Music, The Stranger, and elsewhere. His artwork appears in nearly every issue of Nickelodeon magazine, wherein he has also collaborated with acclaimed artist Dave Cooper under the pen name "Hector Mumbly". The two also collaborated on a "Wonder Woman vs. Super Girl" story for the DC Comics anthology Bizarro. Ryan has also collaborated with Peter Bagge in both AYC and Bagge's Hate Annual, in addition to penciling and inking two stories for his DC series Sweatshop. In addition Johnny has done work for clients such as Nobleworks greetings cards, Rhino Records, and FOX television.

Ryan’s work has earned multiple Ignatz, Harvey , and Eisner award nominations as well as a spot on Rolling Stone’s 2005 Hot List.

Johnson is the 2006 Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award winning talent best known for his Fantagraphics release “Night Fisher”. A Harvey Award nominee for Best Graphic Album, a story which is gritty in it’s honest portrayal of young adults on the cusp of maturity. Johnson’s remarkably confident artwork has earned Night Fisher the honor of making Times list of Best Comic Books 2005 as well as a Harvey Award nomination for Best New Talent.

Johnson attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied under the tutelage of David Mazzucchelli, graduating in 2003. Currently residing in Brooklyn, he most recently celebrated his first gallery show at the Christopher Henry Gallery in New York.

Johnson's comics and illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Premiere Magazine, New York Magazine and The Comics Journal, as well as Fantagraphic's distinctive MOME literary comics anthology.

The Los Angeles-based illustrator has worked on
Comedy Central's South Park TV show and movie,
but Cendreda is most proud of his Zurik Robot and
Dang! mini-comics. With his Dang! comic, Cendreda,
illustrates the tragic life of Herbert Hound
and his encounters with obnoxious teens, fashion
conscious yuppies, and homeless orphans.
Beginning with cute-yet-melancholy one-panel gags,
Cendreda's work has evolved into longer forms of
storytelling that maintain his clear spontaneous
style and dark humor.

Cendreda's comics and illustrations have appeared in
1-UP, Giant Robot, Peko-Peko, Dazed and Confused,
XLR8R, and Arthur.

Regé is best known for creating his own visual poetry
that sets him apart from other cartoonists as one of
the most original artists to enter the medium in the
past decade. His storytelling is neither linear nor
altogether accessible; however, his recognizable thin
line and cute characters draw you into a dreamlike,
sensitive fantasy world that, as odd as it seems, is
entirely realistic. His comics have appeared in
McSweeney’s, and his illustrations have appeared
regularly in The New York Times and Canada’s National
Post. He currently lives in Los Angeles where he plays
drums in The Lavender Diamond Band.

THE AWAKE FIELD is a collection of Regé’s reflections
of small town life during a recent 2-year sabbatical
in a coastal community in southern Rhode Island.
Short stories collide and swirl together leaving
visions of mysterious creatures floating through
lush landscapes, pantomimed fairy tales,
hypnotic dances, Bible quotations, and peace
comics, all in Regé’s idiosyncratic and abstract
poetic cartoon language.

An Eisner Award winner for Best Cover Artist 2004 and 2005, James Jean also received a Harvey Award for Best Cover Artist in 2005 among other honors. Educated at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Jean quickly became an acclaimed illustrator. He has contributed to both national and international publications, some of which include Time Magazine, The New York Times, Rollingstone, Spin and Entertainment Weekly.

We are pleased to announce our newest art opening featuring artwork from the collection of Denis Kitchen.

Cartoonist, writer, editor and publisher Denis Kitchen who may be best known for his comix publishing company, Kitchen Sink Press has worked with some of the most respected creators in comic book history. Since 1990 Denis has been exclusively selling original cartoon art for clients such as Robert Crumb, and both selling art for and representing the Will Eisner estate, the Harvey Kurtzman estate, the Russell Keaton estate and Peter Poplaski, as well as representing Capp Enterprises, Inc., among others.

Artists featured at the SECRET HEADQUARTERS will include:

ROBERT CRUMB (1943- ) is the most prominent member of the "underground comix" movement. His comics are distinctive for their cross-hatched artistry, idiosyncratic story-telling and uncompromising subject matter. He has increasingly achieved recognition in the high-brow fine art world, a status denied even famous fellow artists who labor in the traditionally low-brow cartooning profession. His life has been thoroughly documented, both by ample numbers of his own no-holds-barred autobiographical comics and in several documentaries, including the award-winning Crumb by Terry Zwigoff.

WILL EISNER (1917-2005) is recognized internationally as a legend in the field of sequential art, a term he coined. His cartooning career spanned nearly seventy years and eight decades. In 1940 Eisner created his most famous character, The Spirit, a masked crime fighter. The Spirit was the lead feature in an unprecedented format: a 16-page color comic book that was inserted in Sunday newspapers, the first of numerous Eisner innovations. At its height The Spirit insert appeared in twenty major market newspapers with a combined circulation of 5 million readers each Sunday, quintupling the circulation of America's best-selling monthly comic book.

In 1965, Eisner created the very first successful graphic novel ---and popularizing the term--- with the publication of his seminal A Contract with God, (1978). The semi-autobiographical "graphic novel" revolutionized the art form, inspiring countless fellow professionals worldwide to follow. The graphic novel is now America's fastest-growing literary genre. Following A Contract with God, at an age when his contemporaries had retired, Eisner created over twenty additional graphic novels and instructional books, including such classics as A Life Force, Dropsie Avenue, To the Heart of the Storm, Family Matter and The Name of the Game --- roughly a book per year till his death.

HARVEY KURTZMAN (1924-1993) was a cartoonist, writer and editor with enormous influence on several generations of cartoonists and readers. Kurtzman is probably best known as the comic genius who created MAD in the early 1950s at Entertaining Comics (E.C.). MAD, under Kurtzman, vigorously and fearlessly lampooned American institutions, including other comic strips and television, a medium then in its infancy.

We are pleased to announce the Los Angeles release of DRAMA 007. The Drama magazine provides a quarterly survey of internationally known artists who are currently working on the cutting edge of art. Each issue of The Drama is unique due to a centralized theme that is reflected in the content and layout. Contributing artists provide original and theme specific art work in a variety of fields including illustration, design, comics and photography. The Drama, founded by Joel Speasmaker in early 2000 as an artists collective began showcasing its members artwork online and in gallery shows throughout the East Coast. The magazine developed soon after as an extension of these outlets, focusing solely on the regional members and their work, but quickly evolved into examining a larger scope of artists as its network of contributors and collaborators increased. The Drama Magazine 007 builds upon past efforts to bring the reader the very latest in revolutionary art work.

We are pleased to announce our art opening with Tony Millionaire.
Tony's Maakies is one of the best and most popular weekly comic strips in America, running in over a dozen of the largest U.S. weekly newspapers including The Village Voice, L.A Weekly, Chicago Reader, and Seattle's The Stranger. Maakies features the drunken debauchery of sea-drenched Drinky Crow and Uncle Gabby, blending raunchy vaudeville-style humor with an elegant and classical aesthetic.
Millionaire was presented with the prestigious Eisner Award (twice) for his Sock Monkey stories which chronicle the mischievous adventures of Uncle Gabby, Stormy and Inches.

Tony Millionaire will attend the opening from 8pm to 10pm.

Secret Headquarters will proudly feature Millionaire's one of a kind original works of art through December 31st, 2005.
